Warning – WinXP SP2

Microsoft is about to launch its vital security update Win XP Service Pack 2. But beware; there is no guarantee of backwards compatibility, so if you are running old applications, there is a real risk that the update can cause serious problems. (Latest details from Microsoft).

This is probably the most important update that Microsoft has launched in the last 2 years.  It is designed to significantly change the security structure of the Win XP and if you are automatically accepting Windows Updates, then it is possible that you will be implementing this update without even realising it.

Unfortunately there is also a downside. Microsoft have made it very clear that some applications may not work correctly after the update. It is rumoured that IBM have advised their own staff not to implement the update until they have had a chance to undertake testing. Microsoft’s own CRM software has needed a special patch in order to continue working and any computer running the SQL database engine, will probably need the latest Service Pack, the update to MDAC, and possibly some changes to the permissions structures. (see details)

Our advise is to be cautious. Do not install the update until it has gone live and there is some feedback on the internet as to the types of problems that one should look out for.  If you are running old, or non standard applications, then try to test them out on a non critical computer before implementing the change.

This is probably a very good update and will increase the security of your network, so eventually you will want to make the implementation.
